About Amanda Shires (www.amandashires.net)
World-renowned Texas singer, songwriter, and Country fiddler, Amanda Shires is on a tour of Australia and leaves for a tour of the British Isles after playing Monterey. Amanda is a much in-demand session fiddler in her current home of Nashville. Most recently she has contributed her fiddle and voice to Todd Snider’s critically acclaimed CD.
Amanda Shires (www.amandashires.net) has a growing and enthusiastic national following. However, Shires is just a down-to-earth, self-effacing West Texas gal currently residing in Nashville, working her tail off trying to find her niche in the music industry as an independent artist. In the recent Hollywood movie, “Country Strong”, she played the fiddle player in the band backing Gwyneth Paltrow’s fictional country superstar. In real life, Shires runs with a decidedly more left-of-mainstream-type crowd, including Jason Isbell (she sings and plays fiddle on the former Drive-By Trucker’s latest, Here We Rest) and Justin Townes Earle (she’s the lovely model gracing the cover of his 2008 debut, The Good Life). She also maintains strong ties to the Lone Star State, recording and occasionally performing with the Lubbock band Thrift Store Cowboys (which she joined while still in college) and sometimes even teaching fiddle at Texas Playboys’ singer Tommy Allsup’s summer music camp. She was only 15 the first time she played onstage with the Playboys (the Western swing band made famous by the late Bob Wills) — a mere five years after she coerced her father into buying her first fiddle, a lime-green Chinese instrument from a pawn shop in dusty downtown Mineral Wells, Texas. In 2005, while still a regular member of the Thrift Store Cowboys, Shires released her solo debut, a mostly instrumental showcase for her traditional fiddle chops called “Being Brave.” Her first two albums really put her on the roots-music map: 2008’s Sew Your Heart with Wires, a collection of duets co-written and recorded with singer-songwriter Rod Picott; and what Shires calls her “true” solo debut, 2009’s “West Cross Timbers.” Both were met with enthusiastic reviews and radio support, with the former being voted the fourth best debut album of 2008 by FAR (Freeform American Roots) Chart reporters and the later reaching No. 21 on the Americana Music Association Chart. The Gibson Guitar company featured Shires on their website as one of 2009’s breakout artists, and No Depression called “West Cross Timbers” as “One of the 50 best releases of the Year.”
About The Good Sams:
The Good Sams emerged from the toxic waste bins of the Moss Landing Power Plant. The mutant band, too weird to hang out with other kids, were taken in by the pirates and sea monsters of Moss Landing Harbor. Their days were spent surfing, skateboarding, and hanging out around a fire pit with old men at the beach. At night using a stand up bass, pedal steel, washboard, and fingerpickin' guitar they played old time music with the punkest attitude they could muster. Years later, on one 8th of July, a freak accident occured, the Moss Landing Power Plant blew up! With their birthplace in ashes, The Good Sams had no choice but to hit the road and share their freakish old time sound with the rest of the world. And yes they are a real band!

Tonight we wandered down to Wharf #2 in Monterey for dinner which brought back tons of memories of the fabulous Bradley's Harborfront Restaurant in the early 90's. We enjoyed our dinner at Massaro and Santos, now occupying the space upstairs overlooking the yachts and boats of the Coast Guard Pier and Monterey Harbor.
After dinner, we walked down the stairs and we checked out the Bayview Deli & BBQ downstairs and were amazed! First, since we had been down there, it had doubled in size and had comfortable tables on the deck with gorgeous views of the Monterey Bay and had many comfortable tables inside and out.
Also, the restaurant owner, Lenny, was very friendly and it turned out that he, too, had worked extensively in the music industry. We loved seeing the silver records and photos of musicians on the wall and we are confident we were at some of the same concerts he attended in Los Angeles! The early Springsteen shows were incredible and we all were there in the same venue!
We can't wait to come back and try some of his delicious sandwiches - what a treasure this is! A perfect getaway right in Monterey -- and if you're a diver, kayaker, sailor, skateboarder, picnic-er, bicyclist or even an ordinary car driver, it's there waiting for you.Truly a wonderful getaway!

I love working on Festivals and music-based events. I have a passion for music! In the last few weeks, I've had a great time promoting the Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival, Kidfest, Musical Marketplace, and the Monterey County Fair. They are the ultimate marketing and PR projects for me with so many great promotional angles -- and a great way for us to enjoy great music, too! We had a great time at the Monterey County Fair last week, and of course, enjoyed the performance by Mike Beck & The Bohemian Saints last Saturday night!
Although I am not involved in the marketing of this Northern California event, I did enjoy booking Mike Beck & The Bohemian Saints who will be performing Saturday night and Sunday afternoon next weekend. I hear it's a fabulous festival if you can make it up there! Check it out...the American River Music Festival
The 4th Annual American River Music Festival is a celebration of music and moving water. The festival is September 17-19, 2010 on the banks of the beautiful South Fork of the American River in the Coloma-Lotus Valley one-hour east of Sacramento in the gold country of Northern California. Click here for directions.
The festival features Americana, Folk and Blues music performances throughout our river community. Music takes place on our riverfront main stage, in our three river front campgrounds, on our famous "gorge" whitewater river trip, on our guided riverfront hike, on our wine tasting trip, and fun eateries in the valley. Our shuttle system allows you to experience three full days without getting back into your car.
This Year's Lineup
Jesse Winchester, Slaid Cleaves, Karla Bonoff, Handful of Luvin, Mike Beck and the Bohemian Saints, The California Honeydrops, Anne Weiss with David Jacobs-Strain, Walter Strauss Trio, Leroy Bell and His Only Friends, Berkely Hart, Ma Muse, Dana Hubbard, Forest Sun, Jonny Mojo, Garrin Benfield, The Bungee Jumping Cows, The Easy Leaves, Open Mic showcase artists.
“Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend.
The music was great, and the vibe was incredible.”
